The ancient Cycad can be traced back to the Jurrasic period and it shows when you consider its strange form; looking like a compact and strangly stunted Palm it produces an explosion of dark green glossy foliage that arches above domed central growth spike. Ideal in a pot or in a milder location plant directly as a low growing specimen among gravel or trimmed grass.
Cultivation tips:
Cycas revoluta originates in Japan, making it a tad hardier than most Cycads. It will flourish in full sun in any well drained soil, and this semi hardy Cycad will attempt to overwinter in the UK; but given its beauty why risk it when it would be happy in a nice big pot?. You will need to invest in a sack truck to wheel it under glass come winter though.
