Taller herbaceous perennials often look awkward or swamp other plants but Veronicastrum grows up and mixes well with other tall perennials, being well suited to planting in drifts where space allows. Tall multiple spikes of dark through light blue blossom provide interest for several weeks in mid to late summer and also attract masses of nectar loving insects.
Cultivation tips:
This large upright herbaceous perennial is ideal at the back of a border where it provides masses of late summer colour. Veronicastrum requires moist but well drained soils to flourish and benefits from occasional winter mulching to increase soil fertility and moisture retention. Annually this plant needs cutting back to the ground annually and may require summer irrigation during drought conditions.
