Cercis can often look rather ungainly in its youth, but give it a few years to fill out and it will greatly improve. Masses of early rose pink flowers prior to leaves sprouting provide early impact, and Forest Pansy has the advantage of showy purple tinged foliage and even makes an attempt at autumn colour.
Cultivation tips:
This small diciduous tree will grow in any moist yet well drained soil in full or part sun. At a push Cercis will tolerate a drier soil or even clays in a sheltered spot. Avoid very exposed locations as it can catch winter frosts. Remove frost damage and prune to shape at winters end and mulch every few years to feed.
